It is estimated that 10% of women of childbearing It is estimated that 10% of women of childbearing age, or 400,000 Australian women, have Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). It is caused by hormonal imbalances with an increase in androgen (testosterone) levels. There’s typically a family history of PCOS, however many women are unaware they have it. The condition causes facial hair growth, irregular menstruation, cysts in the ovaries, weight gain, and acne. You should see your doctor if you have concerns about your menstrual periods, if you're experiencing infertility or if you have signs of excess androgen such as worsening hirsutism (extra hair growth), acne and male-pattern baldness. The exact cause of PCOS is unknown. Early diagnosis and treatment along with weight loss may reduce the risk of long-term complications such as type 2 diabetes and heart disease.

There are several possible causes of delayed or missing periods, some less troublesome than others. Stress and low or high body weight can affect your period. These are common health issues that your GP can help you manage. Other, more complicated issues include polycystic ovary syndrome, endometriosis, chronic conditions such as diabetes or celiac disease or thyroid issues. And depending on your age, it could be the beginning of menopause. If you produce a negative pregnancy test and your period doesn’t return, please see your doctor. If they feel you need to see a gynaecologist for a thorough assessment Dr Swift would be happy to see you to help get to the bottom of your illusive period.

Having a little facial hair is totally normal and Having a little facial hair is totally normal and happens to everyone, especially during puberty. So when is facial hair a red flag that there could be an underlaying health concern?

Typically, hair grows from the root or hair follicle just under the skin. There are two types of hair follicles – Vellus hair, which is fine like fuzz, and Terminal hair, which are longer, thicker, and deeper rooted. Having higher levels of testosterone can change Vellus hair into Terminal hair by activating receptors in hair follicles.

Sudden changes in facial hair patterns might mean your body is sending a sign something has changed. It can signal a hormonal imbalance caused by a medical condition or a side effect of medications. Talk to your doctor if you notice - sudden unusual hair growth (face, chin, abdomen, other areas of the body), deepening voice, sudden weight gain, changes in your period (heavy, light, stopped period), thinning hair, acne, or headaches.

If you and your partner are planning to start a fa If you and your partner are planning to start a family in 2021, we wish you the very best of luck. Sadly, not all couples will fall pregnant as easily as they hope due to unexpected fertility issues. There are many possible reasons, including ovulation irregularities, structural problems in the reproductive system, low sperm count, or an underlying medical problem. If you’re over 35 years old and have been trying for more than 6 months, or under 35 and have been trying for more than 12 months, it’s a good idea to seek medical advice from a Fertility Specialist such as Dr Gary Swift. He can diagnose your individual circumstances and provide options to help you achieve a healthy, successful pregnancy.

Folate is the common name for folic acid and relat Folate is the common name for folic acid and related compounds which together make up one of the B group of vitamins necessary for healthy growth and development. They are particularly important for preventing neural tube defects (NTDs) in babies. Studies show that an estimated 400 to 500 pregnancies are affected by NTDs in Australia each year. Evidence suggests that 50 to 70 per cent of these NTDs could be prevented if women of childbearing age boost their levels of folate intake at least one month before conceiving, and in the first three months of pregnancy. Good sources of folate include green leafy vegetables, citrus fruit, berries and bananas, legumes, and some cereals (many breakfast cereals now have added folate). We also recommend that you take an approved pre-natal multi-vitamin that contains folic acid to ensure your folate levels are at a sufficient level to help prevent developmental complications. If you are screened and are found to have a genetic variation you may need Folinic Acid of which there are several variations.
