Both women and men experience considerable distress when experiencing reproductive health problems according to Dr Gary Swift who is a fertility specialist at QFG Gold Coast Fertility Clinic, and is a leading specialist in reproductive medicine and surgery. This article looks at infertility.

Infertility primarily refers to the biological inability of a person to contribute to conception. Infertility may also refer to the state of a women who is unable to carry a pregnancy to full term. There are many biological causes of infertility, including some that medical intervention can treat.

To further explain infertility we can break it down into two types;
Primary infertility – has never been able to conceive.
Secondary infertility – is having difficulty conceiving after already having conceived.

Causes in either sex can include DNA damage, genetic factors, Hypothalamic -pituitary factors, environment factors, specific female and male causes, combined causes and unexplained infertility. Treatment depends on the causes of infertility. Dr Gary Swift’s expertise can assist in finding the causes and can best direct you as to what treatment would suit your needs and can include counselling, fertility treatment – including ovulation induction, artificial insemination, IVF, ICSI, Epididymal and testicular extraction.

For those under the age of 35 and have tried to conceive for a period of 12 months or those who are over the age of 35 and have tried to conceive for a period of 6 months, it is best you consult your GP or gynaecologist for a referral to a fertility clinic and a fertility expert. You and your partner will undergo a series of tests and the test results will give clues to the type of infertility and ultimately a treatment plan to overcome the problem including a blood test, ultrasound examination and semen analysis.

Dr Gary Swift’s expertise, warmth and genuine desire to make our dream a reality made all the difference says Vivienne Lenson a client of Dr Swift’s.
